When it comes to summer, I'm not a really big fan of the sun, the heat gets me in a bad mood. The only good thing about it? its the time when the colorful umbrellas go up ! Everywhere you turn you see these bigs colorful umbrellas making shade for the stands where men and women sell the most delicious fruit filled bags you will find around Los Angeles.
When ever we crave fruit we know exactly where to go.Why not cut up your own fruit and save yourself some money you might ask? well call me silly but I find it better tasting when I purchase it (you know you feel the same way) ha ha ha ha. The fruit is cold and I save myself from peeling and cutting up the fruit, plus they always give me the perfect amount.
The fruit stands normally carry the same kind of fruit, they have a little bit of everything; watermelon, mango, cucumber, pineapple, coconut, jicama, oranges, and some even carry papaya, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon. They sell 3 different size bags, and they vary from $3.00 to $5.00 depending on the amount of fruit you want. To top it all off you can add lemon, salt, chili, or Tajin, a tangy and spicy powder mixture that gives the fruit a little kick. I always get the $5.00 bag with Watermelon and Jicama only, and if I want to change things up a bit I might ask them to throw some mango in there. One thing is for sure, it has to be drowning in lemon with just a pinch of salt.
There happen to be a couple of fruit stands around our neighborhood but we always go to the same one, I guess we have gotten used to seeing a familiar face. See the guy on the picture? his name is Jesus, he seems a bit shy at first but he is really nice, he never says no to adding more lemon when we ask ! ha ha ha ha.
Whenever you are in the mood for a little snack, instead of reaching for the Doritos or Flaming hots, go for the more healthy choice (who wants to gain weight in the summer anyway) and get yourself a bag of fresh fruit. Wether you order only one kind of fruit or get the complete mix you can never go wrong when you visit one of the big colorful umbrellas.
